Health Tested Editorial Team
We've analysed, compared and rated the best products on the market, using the criteria that really count: withanolide content, origin, purity and bioavailability.
At first glance, most products look very similar. The differences only become clear when you take a closer look.
How we rated the products
For this comparison, we put more than 29 ashwagandha products through a multi-stage test:
First, we checked what the manufacturers state: ingredients, dosage, withanolide content and the origin of the extract.
Next, we took a close look at their biochemical quality. Independent laboratories tested the products for purity and effectiveness.
Finally, we took the products ourselves for three months and rated their value for money.
The result: an overall rating that gives equal weight to quality, effectiveness, transparency and everyday practicality. The top 5 ashwagandha products compared

Verdict
Melinava Ashwagandha Liposomal is our winner. Even before we took the first dose, it impressed us above all with its transparency: specific details on the encapsulation technology, the withanolide content and the dosage were available straight away.
One of the product's biggest advantages is its use of state-of-the-art liposome technology. While conventional ashwagandha products lose a considerable amount of their active ingredient in the digestive tract, Melinava embeds its extract in tiny liposomes, which gives it noticeably higher bioavailability.
Melinava uses root extract only, with no fillers. It is the root of Withania somnifera that almost all scientific research is based on.
The product is standardised to 10% withanolides, the range in which clinical studies on stress reduction, cortisol and sleep quality show the clearest results.
The liquid form works faster than capsules, because some of it is absorbed through the lining of the mouth. Thousands of verified reviews paint a consistently positive picture: customers describe relief from stress, nervous tension, exhaustion and sleep problems.

Why Melinava stands out
The market for ashwagandha products keeps growing, and the products on offer can differ considerably. Not all ashwagandha is created equal.
Attractive packaging and special offers often distract from missing information and unclear origins. Yet these are exactly the factors that matter when you're choosing an effective ashwagandha extract.

Even before we took the first dose, Melinava impressed us above all with its transparency. Specific details on the encapsulation technology, the withanolide content of the extract and the dosage were available straight away.
After taking it for four weeks and comparing the results with our laboratory data, we could see why this product sits at the top of our ranking.
One of the product's biggest advantages is its use of state-of-the-art liposome technology.
While conventional ashwagandha products have to pass through the digestive tract largely unprotected, losing a considerable amount of active ingredient on the way,¹ Melinava embeds its ashwagandha extract in tiny liposomes: microscopic fat globules whose structure resembles that of human cell membranes.
Studies show that liposomal ashwagandha has significantly higher bioavailability than conventional products. The liposomes protect the active withanolides on their way through the digestive tract and allow them to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream, without any significant losses to digestive enzymes.²
More advantages
- Root extract only, no fillers
Melinava uses root extract only. It's the root of Withania somnifera that almost all research is based on. Products that add leaves are cheaper to make, but have weaker scientific backing.
- 10% withanolides: three times the usual strength
Many products contain only 2.5 to 5% withanolides. Melinava is standardised to 10%, the range in which clinical studies on stress reduction, cortisol and sleep quality show the clearest results.
- Drops work faster than capsules
Liquid formulas such as Melinava's are partly absorbed through the lining of the mouth and don't need to dissolve in the stomach first. You'll notice this especially if you take them before bed or at particularly stressful times.
- Good-value multi-pack deals
The 60 ml bottle holds exactly 30 servings, which makes it a month's supply. Melinava's discounted bundles of up to 3 packs make it easy to take the drops regularly.
- Pleasant taste
The drops contain no unnecessary additives or sweeteners and can be taken straight or mixed into any drink you like.
- Outstanding customer satisfaction
Thousands of verified reviews paint a consistently positive picture. Customers describe a range of problems they've been able to ease with Melinava: stress and nervous tension, exhaustion and sleep problems.
- Personal customer service
Users particularly praise the company's customer service. Customers describe excellent, personal service that's available around the clock.

Ashwagandha: what you should know
The essentials on ashwagandha: withanolides, effects, how to take it and what to look for when you buy.
What is ashwagandha and where does the plant come from?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a medicinal plant from the nightshade family that has been used in India's Ayurvedic medicine for more than 3,000 years. In Sanskrit, the name roughly means 'smell of the horse', a reference to the root's distinctive odour and to the horse-like strength and vitality attributed to it. Today, ashwagandha is one of the world's best-selling adaptogens and the subject of numerous clinical studies.³
What are adaptogens?
Adaptogens are natural substances that help the body adapt better to stress, whether physical or mental, and restore its inner balance. Ashwagandha is one of the most thoroughly researched adaptogens.
How does ashwagandha work?
Ashwagandha's main active ingredients, the withanolides, influence the body's stress axis (the HPA axis), can regulate cortisol levels and have both a calming and an energising effect: an apparent contradiction that's typical of adaptogens.⁴
What are withanolides and why does their concentration matter?
Withanolides are the primary bioactive compounds in ashwagandha root: steroidal lactones that are credited with most of the plant's therapeutic properties. That's why the withanolide content is the most important quality marker of an extract. At the same daily dose, a product with 2.5% withanolides contains only a quarter of the active compounds in a 10% extract. Many cheap products say little or nothing about standardisation, and that's a warning sign.⁵
Why is pure root extract better than whole-plant or leaf extract?
The scientific evidence for ashwagandha is based almost entirely on studies that used root extracts. The root contains the highest concentration of withanolides and other active compounds. Leaves have a different phytochemical profile and are far less well documented in clinical research. Products that mix leaf and root, or don't make clear which parts they use, can't claim the same effects as pure root extracts.
When and how should you take ashwagandha?
For sleep and relaxation, it's best taken in the evening, 30 to 60 minutes before bed. For stress resilience and mental clarity during the day, on the other hand, taking it in the morning or at midday makes more sense. You can also take it with a little water or juice.
How long does it take for ashwagandha to work?
Ashwagandha isn't a quick fix: its effect builds up over several weeks. Many users report the first changes, such as more restful sleep or a less pronounced reaction to stress, after two to four weeks. The full adaptogenic effect usually develops after six to eight weeks of continuous use.
Can you take ashwagandha long term?
Many people take ashwagandha long term or in extended courses. Clinical studies lasting several months show no negative effects in healthy adults. A common recommendation is to take it for three months, followed by a short break: this on-off cycle is meant to stop the body getting used to the effect. If you use ashwagandha as long-term support during stressful periods, though, you can also take it continuously, ideally while keeping an occasional eye on how you feel.
What are the benefits of ashwagandha?
Clinical studies show the strongest evidence in the following areas:
- reduced stress and lower cortisol levels⁶
- better sleep quality, particularly how quickly you fall asleep and how deeply you sleep⁷
- support with mental exhaustion and concentration problems⁸
- support for recovery after physical exertion in sport
- male hormone balance (testosterone)⁹
- thyroid function
Where can you buy ashwagandha and what should you look for?
You can buy ashwagandha in pharmacies, health food shops, high-street health and beauty chains and online. Here's what really matters:
- Root extract only: avoid products that contain leaves or don't state this clearly.
- Withanolide content: at least 5%, ideally 10%, standardised and stated on the pack.
- Form: liposomal drops offer the highest bioavailability. Capsules are convenient, but they work more slowly and lose more of the active ingredient.
- Transparency: reputable manufacturers name the botanical source (Withania somnifera), the extract's standardisation and the exact dosage.
- No unnecessary additives: alcohol as a solvent, sugar, artificial flavourings and vague 'proprietary blends' are all warning signs.
